The NAFSA: Association of International Educators 60th Annual Conference and International Education Expo takes place in Washington, D.C., May 25-30 2008. NAFSA is anticipating more than 8,000 registrants from over 100 countries. World Learning/SIT will have a strong presence in the committee rooms, in the presentations, and on the exhibit hall floor.
Several SIT faculty and staff currently hold important posts in NAFSA and their work contributed to the planning of this year’s conference:
2008 NAFSA Conference, cont.
• SIT Associate Professor Linda Drake Gobbo is the most recent past chair of NAFSA’s Teaching, Learning & Scholarship Knowledge Community.
• NAFSA also conducts an Academy for International Education, which is a nine-month program providing an opportunity to share knowledge, expertise, and leadership within the international education community through multifaceted training and networking. Linda Drake Gobbo is a lead trainer in the Academy and SIT Assistant Professor Sora Friedman is a Trainer with the program. Friedman also serves as the Chair-Designate for the NAFSA Training Coordination Subcommittee.
• SIT Director of International Student and Scholar Services Janet Hulnick serves as the Vermont Representative for NAFSA’s Region XI, and Associate Professor David Shallenberger serves as Vermont whip.
A number of faculty and staff are presenting at the conference. The new Vice President and Dean of SIT Study Abroad, Maureen Powers will make two presentations. Other staff presenting from SIT Study Abroad include Sarah Martin, Laurie Black (PIM alumni), Lisa Chappell (also a PIM International Education alumni), Leonore Cavallero and Ginni Fleck. Akilah Clarke, Megan Wood (both alumni of the PIM program) and Katherine Yngve will have a poster in the Work, Internship, and Volunteer Abroad poster group. Last but not least, Graduate Institute’s Rebecca Bell will appear on a panel on student recruitment, and Capacity Building Services’ Dorothea Antonio will present at the Poster session for Sponsors and Program Agencies. Many current students who are wrapping up their on-campus phase will also attend the conference, and there will be presentations by numerous alumni of the PIM program who are working in the field of International Education.
If you happen to be at NAFSA, you may visit World Learning in the Expo hall at booth #600 to meet representatives from SIT Graduate Institute, SIT Study Abroad, International Development Programs and Constituent Relations. The conference is swarming with alumni of the PIM program (and the MAT program too!), as well as many, many people, organizations and agencies that have long standing and strong relationships with SIT and World Learning.
