Admissions Counselor Maria Echevarria: SIT on the road, the Green Festivals

SIT on the road:  the Green Festivals, by Maria EchevarriaComing up!  Seattle and Chicago, and SIT will be there…

Every spring and fall, SIT Graduate Institute admissions counselors hit the road to conferences, graduate school and career fairs, as well as other professional events to meet with prospective students like you.  Personally this is one of my favorite parts of the job as it gives me an opportunity to meet people who are excited about our programs and/or want to learn more about them, and to talk about SIT with many people at the same time!  I often end up losing my voice, but it’s worth it!

SIT class, outdoors

One of the events which we have enjoyed these past few years are the Green Festivals – an environmental, social and economic justice conference that takes place each year in Washington DC, San Francisco, Chicago, and new this year – Seattle.  The Green Festivals have only been around since 2004, but they have been making a big splash.  The San Francisco event was extended from two days to three because of the sheer number of people – over 40,000 attending!  The conferences are intentionally very accessible, so for $10-$15 you can spend two days listening to exciting speakers (examples of past speakers include Amy Goodman, Ralph Nader, Bill McKibben and many more!), meet some great vendors doing amazing work, and come say hello to the SIT booth!  Better yet, as an exhibitor SIT receives a number of free passes for each event, so if you want to come see us at the Green Festival, send an email to admissions@sit.edu and we can arrange to get you a ticket (first come, first served).

SIT students, winter in Vermont

The event in Seattle is coming up April 12 & 13, so if you are in the Seattle area or have always wanted to visit, please check out this amazing conference and stop by the SIT booth 645 to meet Sedia Dennis – a Washington native, SIT alum, and PIM/MAT admissions counselor!   If you are unable to go to the conference that weekend or if Midwest is more your cup of tea, please come by the Chicago Green Festival on May 17 & 18.  I will be there (SIT booth 2120), hopefully along with some cheerful alum to answer all your questions about SIT and life after SIT.

SIT representatives make it to a fair number of fairs, festivals and conferences each year and are always happy to meet with you.  Of course we also highly encourage applicants to come visit our campus if possible to get a first-hand impression of the school, classes, students, etc.  We host several Open Houses a year  as well as Virtual Open Houses for those who are too far or find it impossible to come to us.  We also arrange for individual visits year-round, although we highly recommend you visit while classes are in session so that you can sit in on a class.  So whether it’s out on the road or on the SIT campus, I hope that you will pay us a visit soon!
